TALKING with VU TA LINH
STAR CREATION WINNER 2013
I went to London Center for Fashion Studies, Hanoi today for a "Thirsty Thursday" where you can talk about fashion all day. The highlight of today was Vu Ta LInh, the first Vietnamese winner of Audi Star Creation 2013 (An event of the Asia Fashion Exchange which aims to uncover Asian talents, present them with the opportunity to launch their fashion careers and groom them into tomorrow's top fashion designers). Here, Ta Linh talked about his journey to become a fashion designer, his collection, the competition and answered fans questions.
Vu Ta Linh graduated from Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema, Custom Design. After, he went to London Center for Fashion Studies to learn more. He had his collection at Vietnam Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2013. Linh said it's like fate he met Minh Hanh, VNFW's organizer and she saw his look book and invited him to the show.
His inspiration of SC13 collection came from the "rice terraces". He said he was kind of stuck when he looking for "inspiration" which is the main theme of the contest, and one night, the pictures of the "rice terraces" just came up in his laptop, where he collected many, many things from Vietnam culture. The interesting thing about the collection was about the garment that he created by so many different fabric and layers, stitching, embroidery, weaving and patchwork. The finishing was perfect inside out, with perfect sewing skill, and the clothes was pretty much practical (I was asking him if I could buy one of the jacket from his collection)
Ta Linh is obviously a real talented designer but he's still such a chill, cool guy, and pretty humble. He's a role model for a lot of young designers and design students. All the teachers are so proud of him and talked about what a hard working student he was. He shared a lot with the audience about his experiences in fashion study and how he learned to believe in himself to win such a big international contest. Ta Linh will soon come back to Singapore to start his internship with FJ Benjamin.
I wish him best of luck in his career and can't wait to see his next collection in Star Creation 2014 final.
PS: Honestly, when I heard Thirsty Thursday, I though about sipping cocktails while talking about fashion all day. I was really looking for the bar when I came :P
